Restless

Saint Augustine and Saint MonicaIn honor of Saint Augustine’s Feast day that just passed I want to take some time to reflect on a quote by him….

“You made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”

What a beautiful reminder that we are not made of this world! I think it’s so easy to get wrapped up in things like work, school, possessions, etc. The world tells us that all our thoughts and efforts must go to these things. If this happens, we find ourselves restless… always wanting more, always trying to be the best. There is no winning. You will always be restless.

Now here’s the good news! We were not made for worldly things. Our God loves us so much, He made us for Him and Him alone. What an amazing refuge He is. His arms are always open and we are invited to rest in Him.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

This invitation has always and will always be here. God wants to help you carry your cross. Will you let Him? Sometimes it can be easy to give our Lord pieces of your life “Yes, I trust you Lord…but maybe not with ____” But God wants all of you. All your brokeness, your strengths, your weaknesses. When we give Him everything He gives us back even more.

“You welcome all who come to you, though you never lost them” (Saint Augustine’s Confessions)

Even in those times when it was difficult to feel His presence, He was there… He never left you.

Saint Augustine, himself had been through a lot. He lead a life that was full of struggles. We can take his words to heart. For me, Saint Augustine, is very relatable. As a youth he would pray “Give me chastity and continence, but not yet.” We all want to live a good but we need to take the next step and commit to making some changes. It can start with a simple prayer of “Lord, I invite you into my heart, show me my ways that need changing.” Our God knows our hearts better than we do.

When we invite Him in He is the one that will give our hearts rest.

Hello, God? What are you wearing right now?

tuxedoMy thoughts on personal style have evolved over time to a point where comfort rules above all else.  It’s not that I did not seek out comfort in the clothes I purchased during my life; it’s just that now comfort seems to be the primary concern.  Now, do not confuse comfortable with sloppy.  Being first generation Italian, sloppy is never good outside of the back yard or basement.  I just mean comfortable in that you are not even aware that you are wearing clothes – nothing tight or itchy for sure, but nothing that merits a thought or concern regardless of what you are doing.  Living in Arizona you learn to appreciate comfortable clothing.  “How will I look in this when I begin to sweat?” is a question you probably need to be asking yourself more than most Americans.

Over the past several years I have found that scrubs are pretty comfortable and if purchased in black can be worn for almost every occasion…well at least if you apply my new style sensibility.  They really have come a long way in style and functionality with all those pockets and places to put stuff.  I stick to the scrub pants; only the true medical professionals should be wearing the scrub tops.  Uniqlo makes these very comfortable undergarments – sort of silky – that do well in heat and cold – Heat Tech and Airness, affordable and comfortable.  So, when I find myself not working anymore it will probably be in scrubs and Uniqlo underwear.  I also love my Merrill slip on brown suede shoes.

Do you think God created us all anticipating that we would spend a good part of our time, energy and resources figuring out what we were going to wear each day and sometimes several times a day?  I would think not.  He created a planet with Continue reading

**It’s the hardest thing to give away
And the last thing on your mind today
It always goes to those that don’t deserve

It’s the opposite of how you feel
When the pain they caused is just too real
It takes everything you have just to say the word…

Forgiveness
Forgiveness

It flies in the face of all your pride
It moves away the mad inside
It’s always anger’s own worst enemy
Even when the jury and the judge
Say you gotta right to hold a grudge
It’s the whisper in your ear saying ‘Set It Free’

Forgiveness, Forgiveness
Forgiveness, Forgiveness

Show me how to love the unlovable
Show me how to reach the unreachable
Help me now to do the impossible
Forgiveness

It’ll clear the bitterness away
It can even set a prisoner free
There is no end to what it’s power can do
So, let it go and be amazed
By what you see through eyes of grace
The prisoner that it really frees is you

Forgiveness, Forgiveness
Forgiveness, Forgiveness

Show me how to love the unlovable
Show me how to reach the unreachable
Help me now to do the impossible
Forgiveness

I want to finally set it free
So show me how to see what Your mercy sees
Help me now to give what You gave to me
Forgiveness, Forgiveness

Read, pray, sing, forgive…..repeat

You’re gonna have to serve somebody

propaganda 1A couple of days ago, ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) blew up a shrine in Mosul, Iraq that commemorates the burial place of the Jewish prophet Jonah.  I am pretty sure that there was some accompanying press release from the terrorist group supporting the action as part of their goal to cleanse the state of Iraq from what they consider corrupt and blasphemous Islamic and Christian idolatry.  (There was a Christian church on the site many years ago, so an obvious attack on all three major religions.)  Now this group is not the first misguided bunch of souls to twist the word of God into something God never intended.  (We all know about the grief and sorrow caused by the crusades and inquisitions.)

What makes people do these types of things, presumably in the name of God?  It just seems that throughout history, mankind has always been subject to some form of propaganda.  (Propaganda is a form of communication aimed towards influencing the attitude of a population toward some cause or position.)  In the extreme, it is sometimes seen as a cult.  (A cult is a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.)  I guess a zealous devotion to Christ and His teachings might be seen as ‘cult-worship’ by some people, even those that consider themselves Christians.  I would not be surprised if Continue reading

The Solution to All of the World’s Problems

reefer madnessI know a few people who have the card – a medical marijuana card.   Yes, I said ‘a few’.  From my observation there appear to be two types of card holders.  The first are those whose sole purpose is to find some relief from an ailment or to supplement some another type of treatment – like chemotherapy.  One friend is having very good results using cannabis to help with the nausea and appetite loss that chemo causes.  Then there are those that may have a legitimate illness but seek more the euphoria or high that marijuana provides and use the opportunity to get it ‘legally’.  In the latter group the goal seems to be more about the high, whether or not it addresses the ailment.  These observations caused me to think about a few things this week.

First, let’s consider the whole concept of legislating behavior when it comes to consumption.   We have all heard the term, ‘everything in moderation’, normally good advice.  I personally have come to the conclusion that there is nothing on this earth that is inherently evil, and that would include drugs like marijuana.  If you took a field of pot and just let it sit there, nothing evil would happen.  It would grow, bloom, seed, die and go back into the earth where it came from.  The same would go for tobacco, coffee beans, cocaine, and the poppies used to make heroine.  Like all things created, God’s creations are good.  He even says so:

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food….God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. Gen. 1:29

So, all of creation is not only good, it is very good.  And I believe it is very good, not just because He said it, but God created it, and He created it all to serve man, His greatest creation.  Here’s the point:  Evil is simply a by-product of the free-choice God gives us – primarily to choose to love Him and be with Him.  And, giving free-choice is quite hollow if it is given selectively.  So then, it is not money that is the root of all evil, it is the love of money that leads us to evil.  (By the way that saying is nowhere to be found in the Bible.)

Well then how do we take a divinely created ‘good’ thing like pot, or tobacco, or coffee, or cocaine, sex, food, alcohol, etc., etc., etc. and make it evil.  At some point we choose to Continue reading

The Bible is not…

scrollA few weeks ago I was on Christian blog where one of the posts was from a person looking for evidence that the Bible was indeed just a collection of interesting stories and not the actual word of God.  This person was looking for confirmation of several possible contradictions within the Bible that would prove it to be much less than what it actually is.  There was a lot of back and forth about science and history and the like as if the Bible was a high school text book.  So, after considering everything that I have been taught by my Bible teacher, I responded with the post below and have yet to get a response:

The bible is not a science book.  If you are looking for scientific explanations of creation and origin of man you will be sorely disappointed. The early writers of the bible, although divinely inspired, did not have the benefits of thousands of years of scientific study required to present a scientific evaluation of these events.  And for God to present himself in the context of E=Mc2 would seem a bit preposterous to a civilization that had no concept of the universe outside of the few square miles they inhabited.  Revelation is provided in comprehensible pieces – spoon fed over time.  The Bible is historical in that it is the history of our salvation.  It does not include everything there is to know, only what we need to know in order to live our lives as believers.  There are parts of the Bible that are to be taken literally (Christ was crucified, buried and resurrected), and parts to be taken literarily (Noah spent 3 days in the belly of a whale).  There is also nothing that science has subsequently determined that contradicts the existence of God, and there never will be.  God is the author of science as much as He is the author of the universe.

Christ was a devout Jew, and as a devout Jew He grew up studying and knowing scripture.  There are many instances where Christ Continue reading

And now a word about satan…

satan1There is a widely used phrase these days among Christians that we are Christ’s hands and feet.  In short, that it is up to us to continue Christ’s work here on earth using our own physical effort and personal resources.  We manifest Christ here on earth by our actions. There is a line of thought that the same applies for satan.  Basically that satan is not manifested in any physical form at this time in history other than by you or me; manifested at the very point when we decide to become Its hands and feet.  Now, I believe that every one of us hears from satan every day.  It (satan is an ‘It’ to me) is pervasive in that It takes up occupancy in us from birth (think original sin). It knows us intimately. It knows what we want and what we want to hear. It helps to form our justifications and our prejudices. It also knows how to work you in particular because, It’s in there. And It ain’t going anywhere any time soon.  There is a contrary belief that satan is hiding behind a bush or a tree and It is going to sneak up and make our lives miserable.  I’m coming to believe that satan is only working within us. (So stop looking around for dudes with horns and hooves, and puffs of smoke.)

Let’s take it to the extreme – let’s say that each and every being on this planet (through their own free will) lived a single day by basing each decision and action on the philosophy of ‘what would Jesus do?’  Where would satan be then? It may be in the past or the future but It wouldn’t be here on that day. And what happens if we were all able to do that for a week, then a year…it’s the individual battle where either good or evil prevails, grasshopper…(remember the 60’s bumpersticker ‘what if they declared a war and no one showed up?’)

So thankfully, the news in not all bad. At the least we know where It lives. The sooner you understand that even though satan, the devil, the dark side, evil force or whatever, is not around us but in us we understand that we have a say in giving It life. We decide to listen, then succumb to a subtle steady drone until say, abortion becomes an acceptable alternative, or, an abrupt shout that slaps a face. But in the end it is we who manifest satan on earth. The Really Good News is that this is how we also manifest Jesus.  Christ also dwells within and through His spirit we can choose to succumb to His mercy and His model.  It is we who cause either of the two to live among us…so learn how to work that to our advantage…and always remember satan is all talk and no action without you.

man + woman + love = something devine

images (1)There was a very popular book written in the 1990’s, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.  Although I have not read it, I have heard enough about it (and read the Wikipedia post) to understand the premise.  Essentially the author reminds us that the two genders have fundamental psychological (his word, not mine) differences that need to be reconciled in order for any relationship to succeed.  OK, I can get that.  I mean, from the time you start shaving that becomes fairly evident.  But here’s the rub.  Most of our inter-gender conflicts are less a result of knowing we are different, and more a result of not willing to use those differences to our mutual advantage.  Each side seeks its comfort in what it knows best – itself.  We miss our greatest opportunities when we avoid cooperation.

Take for instance this example.  I have been in the design business for about 40 years now.  Over that time I have see a marked shift in our design sensibility.  Over the past generation or so there has been an explosion of women joining the work-world, at least in the western work-world.  Now, you may have your own opinions about the pros and cons of this movement, but one thing that is for certain is Continue reading
