More About Truth (in Life and Song)

truth 1

I started writing this post in order to tell you about a song I heard the other day that reminded me again that real truth is all around us.  It shows itself in everyday common sense, in cliches, old wives tales, rules of thumb, bumper stickers, and t-shirts.  There is just something about truth that strikes a chord.  Since we were originally created in truth, we have a natural ability to detect it and know it as truth.  Sort of the same way we seek warmth, or water, food or love.  Unfortunately, we live in a world where there are great efforts made to manipulate, spin and sometimes even fabricate the truth to fit a particular agenda.  Now since God only creates truth, this characteristic has its source in Satan and is traced to the day that he introduced mankind to sin in the form of disobedience to God.  And from there we have forever been subject to peeling away layers of deception in order to dwell in what we were made to dwell – absolute truth.  A result of all this demonic chicanery, and, evidence of our desire to know the truth, is that there are literally millions of police, investigators, historians, researchers, fact-checkers, congressional committees, and news-people around the world whose sole job is to uncover truth.  We are preoccupied with it, whereas it was never God’s intention to have this search for truth take up any of our time; we were intended to live truth by simply obeying God’s Word.

So what is my point?  Well, back to this song.  One of the ways I have found that helps in detecting truth is seeing if it stands the test of time…and normally a long time.  It’s not like man invents truth.  Man either discovers a truth that has always been, or it is revealed to man, as in scripture.  There were centuries when man thought that the world was flat.  And then one day real truth is revealed.  So, time is a good test because if enough of it passes truth becomes revealed.  There are truths yet to be revealed, some of which may even replace the truth we think we see today.  Then there is the ‘striking a chord’ test.  It just feels right.  This song passes both tests.  The song is “The Words I Would Say” by Sidewalk Prophets.  The lyrics are truth.  Watch and read the lyrics and it will be no new revelation, but simply a remix of several scriptural passages.  Proverbs Chapter 3 is a great source of this type of truth.

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.

Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him,and he will make your paths straight.

This song and the scripture that inspires it are reminders to us seekers of the truth to give it freely once we do find it.  I think of my own children and these indeed are the words I would say if I only had 3 minutes and 19 seconds to say it.  I have to believe that most parents would feel the same, as those who are not biological parents, but are parents none the less, or those with nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends young and old.  We all have some audience to which truth should be our own song.  Don’t keep it to yourself, because we are the river upon which truth runs – keep it flowing.
